BEYOND THE BEDROOM

These works were inspired by past ephemera, psychedelic art, and the scopophilic projection of women in culture throughout the ages. This series focuses on the fetishization of women in popular culture, and in particular pornography. The subjects from this series are all taken from 1970s mens magazines. Feminism in the 70’s largely retained the patriarchal attitudes of previous generations, Robert Crumb aptly stated “Free love meant free sex and food for men. Sure, women enjoyed it too, and had a lot of sex, but then they served the men.” This is clearly depicted within the pages of 60’s and 70’s girlie magazines where women are served up for consumption!

My process involved drawing the female figure from the magazine and then situating her within suggestive patterns and icons. The icons or motifs are not suggestive when isolated from the female figure however the juxtaposition with the female nude shifts their meaning. I am interested in how society has imbued these motifs with symbolic meaning in this context.  Next, I transfered the image to acetate using a permanent pen and paint the reverse side (working backwards) with gouache. A second piece of acetate is painted with gouache to create the background. Finally I place the two layers together, the top layer in reverse to create a flat glossy appearance like the pages of a magazine and the bottom with the rougher matte paint strokes faced upwards.

However I didn’t have the right kind of paint and the colours came out patchy as I was in lockdown with limited access to paint and it was my first attempt at this process. So I recently touched up the colours in photoshop and procreate. Enjoy..

A cartoon mashup I drew in Procreate.. I have been incredibly unwell and so drawing in bed has really been all I have managed to do the last couple of months… this is Jem from the 80s show Jem and the Holograms…reimagined as a woman from today… I was a huge fan of the show growing up… I’m currently reading one of my favourite authors Brett Easton Ellis new book why is set in the 80s totally taking me back to this amazing era … Framing works for the upcoming Modern Lovers show.. with @xak_and_baba at @dollhousegallerybrunswick I frame my work in layers because I paint in reverse on acetate and some artworks like the Dangerous Woman have multiple layers.. all need to be box framed to show the depth and shadows that painting on plastic can give… unfortunately I’m waiting for more frames in the post as there’s a shortage everywhere!! You can see in this reel that the reverse side is all messy … imagine if you could see the back of a canvas painting… but my technique is to paint totally in reverse with the tiniest details like the pupils put down first .. the complete opposite of normal painting… once you have started building up the layers there’s no going back to fix it! And because I work with gouache if you go over a section it can reactivate the paint underneath and you end up with mud ! So I have to work in sections and pray that the blend lines are smooth! - [x] Working on porcelain figurines for the upcoming Modern Lovers exhibition at Dollhouse Gallery Brunswick with @xak_and_baba I’m using paper clay, epoxy and trying to make the mini metal rings with florist wire .. I got bob’s automative glue all over my fingers 🤣… think I’m going to have mini bondage paraphernalia attached to me over the coming week 🤣 Toddlerpillar project I’m also working on… these soft vinyl toddlerpillars were designed by The My Little Phoney blank begins… Another project I’m working on… the My Little Phoney Project… I’m going to attempt to turn mine into My Little Uhu Glue or Clag Pot Pony… since growing up I was told ponies were sent to the glue factory when they had reached their expiry date and I absolutely love horsies and I’m appalled by the treatment many of them get at the end of their lives!
